Rolling Blockade

Ryan-R292 jogged up the stairs and into the armory, which was set up on a raised platform two floors above the Commonwealth's navigation core.  He had lost his weapons under the wreckage of the conveyor belt.  He pulled an assault rifle off of one of the wall racks, slung it over his shoulder, and let it rest on his back.  He took several spare magazines for the rifle and turned to face the Spartan that had followed him up.  "Jacob was a good soldier," Alison-A289, the only other surviving member of Echo Team, stated, "we're going to make those bastards pay."  She was talking about Sierra 652, who had just bled out through his femoral artery and died.  She grabbed a sniper rifle off of a wall rack.  Ryan paused, and then responded, "Yes, we are" and grabbed a shotgun from the racks as well as some extra shells and grenades.

The voice of Scimitar One came in over TEAMCOM, "Alright, Spartans. We're going to be here a little longer than we planned, and we've got more Covenant on our doorstep.  You know the plan: defend the navigation core at all costs.  Whirlwind, stay inside and support the troops in case they get inside.  We don't know how long the security barriers will hold."

Ryan and Alison returned to the other Spartans, Ryan had switched his weapons' placements; he was now holding his assault rifle.  They had reached the bottom of the stairs when Scimitar One, Colin-Z957 turned and addressed them, "Echo Team, you're with me and Scimitar.  We'll hold the perimeter as long as we can."  Ryan and Alison nodded their understanding and followed their new team leader and Scimitar Six to the auxiliary loading bay at the end of the facility to secure the Warthog LRV waiting there.

The four Spartans entered the machine shop and lined up along wall next to the large bay doors leading outside, the loading bay was just outside of the door to the left.  Colin looked back at the three Spartans behind him and said, "Six, take Alison across to those water tanks, give us sniper support.  Ryan, I'll drive, you shoot."

Ryan nodded, Scimitar One turned to the door and raised a hand and held up three fingers.  Ticking off the seconds, the four Spartans shouldered their weapons.  957 waved his hand forward and the Spartans swung out of the shop like a door on a hinge, each soldier covering a different angle.  957 yelled, "Go!" as plasma bolts and pink needles rained down on their position.  957 and 292 split apart and jogged backwards toward the loading bay, laying down suppressing fire on the Elites that they could see.  289 and Eryn-M157 set off at a dead sprint for the water tanks.  Once they reached their objective, they waited for their shields to recover from the shots they had taken before 289 readied her sniper rifle and scoped in on the area behind the destroyed Wraith tank.

292 and 957 had both emptied their magazines by the time they had jogged backward ten meters, with five to go.  292 signaled for 957 to make a run for the warthog as he reloaded, Scimitar One followed the suggestion.  292 heard 957's voice, "Good to go! Come on," 292 turned and covered the rest of the distance to the vehicle.  Hopping into the rear bed of the Warthog, 292 spooled up the mounted machine gun and yelled, "Echo Four, good to go!"

957 gunned the engine as a pair of Elites broke cover on the stairs in front of the facility.  292 mowed the aliens down with ease, he swung the gun left and saw an Elite lean out from behind a rock with a plasma launcher in hand, as the weapon began to level toward them, a loud bang echoed through the battlefield and a smoke trail led back from where the warrior's head was back to 289's rifle.

292 and 957 were cutting a swath of death and destruction into the left flank of the Elites' force.  Any enemies that 292 didn't cut down with the gun turret were either run down by 957 or picked up by 289's rifle, but that changed quickly.  Two Banshees fell in behind them and started shooting.  292 cursed, loudly.  "Hang on!" 957 yelled, turning a hard right, 292 fired back at the Banshees as 957 wildly swerved between rocks and pieces of the Commonwealth's hull to avoid the plasma bombs and bolts, while also dishing out orders over the radio as needed.  They were driving along the side of the ship, toward the crane.  The shots were close and getting closer, the machine gun stopped firing and the end of the barrel was smoking.  "Shit," 292 took a frag grenade, pulled the pin and hurled it at the leading Banshee.  His timing was perfect, the grenade detonated inches away from the front of the fighter.  The blast stunned the pilot, who reflexively jerked the craft to the left, and blindly smashed into the side of the Commonwealth, destroying the small craft, and leaving a gaping scar in the hull.

They passed under the crane with the hostile Banshee in tow.  The machine gun had sufficiently cooled and 292 began shooting again.  957 took a right turn in front of the landing pad and made a mad dash for the junkyard's outbuilding.  The Banshee centered up on the Warthog and fired a perfectly aimed plasma bomb, before 292 could say anything, 957 jerked the Warthog to the right and pulled the handbrake, forcing the vehicle into a sharp U-turn.  The explosive sailed past them and 957 gunned the engine to head the other direction.

The wheels were turning in place, trying desparately to gain traction, when 292 heard a disconcerting sound, a Ghost.  The Ghost careened into the left side of the Warthog, along the rear wheel. The truck flipped onto its side and rolled, causing the Spartans inside to tumble out onto the ground.  The Banshee was about to make another pass, it couldn't miss this time, it was lining up its shot, suddenly, a bright red beam sliced the fighter in half.  The banshee exploded, raining debris on everything below it.

An unfamiliar voice chimed in over TEAMCOM, "What did I say about being careful?"  957 responded, "Thank you, Four."  Just as they crawled out from under the 'Hog, the Elites were on them.  Four Elites had appeared from under the crane and charged at the Spartans, laying down a field of fire.  The Ghost came into 292's view and started shooting.

957 and 292 were behind the flipped 'Hog and taking a lot of fire.  289 called to them over TEAMCOM, "We're moving to cover you now, hang on."  957 responded, "get to it, then," 157 and 289 took off out of the enclosure.  They ran back towards the refinery and down the concrete stairs in front of the building.  289 looked down her sights at one of the attacking Elites.  She fired, and the Elite dropped to the ground.  Immediately after her shot, a pink needle struck her shoulder, popping upon impact with her shield.  "Sharpshooter," 157 yelled, "we need to get inside, now!"

292 saw the other Spartans rush inside the refinery, chased by several needles, "There goes our support," 292 leaned out and fired four shots, striking his target, and making its shields flare.  957 spoke over the radio again, "does anyone have eyes on us?"

"Affirmative, this is Scimitar Four," Steven-W647 responded, bringing an Elite down with his sniper rifle, "I have eyes on you now; I see two ground contacts and a Ghost… WHOA!  I have six contacts at your ten o' clock, high.  Jumpers, with swords and repeaters" The six Elites, standing on the scaffold next to where the conveyor belt was once seated, took flight, each of their jetpacks leaving twin smoke trails, soaring over the battlefield and landing in front of the Warthog.  Another shot from Scimitar Four's rifle dropped one of the Elites as the other two began to charge forth from the rocks around the crane.  Two more shots from Four's rifle brought an end to the threat posed by the Ghost's pilot.

Sierra 957 and Sierra 292 readied their shotguns.  The two Spartans were about to be overrun.

Badass!

In other news, I think I've decided: I will use a Covenant POV for my next part.
